History

University of Central Arkansas was founded in 1907 when the Arkansas State Legislature created the Arkansas State Normal School in Conway to train teachers for the state’s public schools. The institution began operations in 1908 under its first president, John James Doyne. In 1925, the school became Arkansas State Teachers College, reflecting an expanded teacher education mission. As academic programs broadened beyond teacher preparation, the name changed to State College of Arkansas in 1967. On January 21, 1975, the institution officially became University of Central Arkansas, marking its transition to a comprehensive university. Over time, University of Central Arkansas added graduate programs, expanded campus facilities, and developed colleges in fields such as business, health sciences, fine arts, and natural sciences. Today, University of Central Arkansas serves students from across Arkansas and beyond while maintaining its historic campus in Conway.
