University of California-San Francisco

The University of California-San Francisco is a public research university located in San Francisco, California. It is part of the University of California system and is dedicated exclusively to graduate education in the health sciences. The history of University of California-San Francisco began in 1864 with the founding of Toland Medical College in San Francisco by surgeon Hugh Toland. In 1873, the college became the Medical Department of the University of California, integrating medical education into the state’s public university system. Over time, additional professional schools were established, expanding instruction in dentistry, pharmacy, and nursing. In 1964, University of California-San Francisco gained full administrative independence from UC Berkeley and became the ninth campus in the University of California system, devoted exclusively to the health sciences. In 1970, the UC Regents formally adopted the name University of California-San Francisco. The development of the Mission Bay campus beginning in 1999 marked a major expansion of research facilities. Today, University of California-San Francisco is recognized as a leading graduate health sciences institution in California.
