History

University of Alaska Anchorage was founded in 1954 as Anchorage Community College, created to serve the growing population of Anchorage, Alaska. In the late 1960s, demand for upper-division coursework led to the establishment of Anchorage Senior College. In 1977, Anchorage Senior College became a four-year institution and was renamed the University of Alaska, Anchorage. A decade later, in 1987, the university merged with Anchorage Community College, forming what is now known as University of Alaska Anchorage. Over time, University of Alaska Anchorage expanded its academic offerings and incorporated community campuses across Southcentral Alaska, including Kenai Peninsula College and Kodiak College. The university developed graduate programs and research initiatives to meet regional needs. Today, University of Alaska Anchorage remains a central institution in the state’s public university system, serving students in Anchorage and surrounding communities.
