Tuskegee University

Tuskegee University is a private, historically Black university located in Tuskegee, Alabama. Founded in 1881, it has played a central role in the education of African Americans in the United States. The institution offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees across fields such as engineering, business, education, agriculture, health sciences, and veterinary medicine. Tuskegee University is especially known for its historic leadership under Booker T. Washington, the work of scientist George Washington Carver, and its connection to the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. Tuskegee University was founded on July 4, 1881, in Tuskegee, Alabama, as the Tuskegee Normal School for Colored Teachers. Established through local political efforts and led by its first principal, Booker T. Washington, the school began in a one-room church building with 30 adult students. It later became the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, emphasizing teacher training, agriculture, and industrial education. In the early 20th century, George Washington Carver advanced agricultural research at Tuskegee University, strengthening its academic reputation. The institution expanded into degree-granting programs in the 1920s and was renamed Tuskegee Institute in 1937. During World War II, it was the training site for the Tuskegee Airmen. In 1985, Tuskegee Institute achieved university status and became Tuskegee University, continuing to expand graduate and professional education while preserving its historic campus.
