History

Truett McConnell University was founded in 1946 when the Georgia Baptist Convention chartered a new junior college in Cleveland, Georgia, to serve North Georgia Baptists. The institution opened its doors to students in 1947 as Truett-McConnell College, enrolling its first class and appointing Rev. Clinton Cutts as president. Originally established to prepare individuals for pastoral ministry and Christian service, the college received accreditation in 1966 to grant two-year degrees. In 2002, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools approved Truett McConnell to offer four-year degrees, marking a significant academic expansion. The university introduced graduate programs beginning in 2013 and continued to broaden its academic offerings. In 2016, Truett-McConnell College officially became Truett McConnell University, reflecting its expanded mission and degree programs. Today, Truett McConnell University remains rooted in its Baptist heritage while serving undergraduate and graduate students in Northeast Georgia.
