Troy University

Troy University is a public university based in Troy, Alabama, with additional campuses in Montgomery, Dothan, and Phenix City, as well as a broad network of online programs. Founded as a teacher-training institution, it has grown into a comprehensive university offering undergraduate and graduate degrees across fields such as business, education, health sciences, nursing, criminal justice, and the arts and sciences. Troy University serves traditional residential students on its main campus and a large population of adult, military-affiliated, and online learners. Its programs are designed to accommodate working professionals and students seeking flexible study options while maintaining a strong presence in southern Alabama.

Troy University was founded on February 26, 1887, when the Alabama Legislature established the Troy State Normal School in Troy, Alabama, to train teachers for the state’s public schools. Joseph Macon Dill served as the institution’s first president. In 1893, the name changed to Troy State Normal College, and in 1929 it became Troy State Teachers College as it expanded its academic offerings and moved to its present campus. The institution began granting bachelor’s degrees in the early twentieth century and was renamed Troy State College in 1957, the same year it was authorized to offer master’s degrees. In 1967 it became Troy State University, reflecting continued growth, including the creation of satellite campuses serving military communities. In 2004, the board approved the name Troy University, and in 2005 the university unified its campuses under one accreditation, forming the modern Troy University system.
