History

Trine University was founded in 1884 in Angola, Indiana, as Tri-State Normal College, established by local residents to prepare teachers for the growing region. The institution expanded its academic scope in the early twentieth century, adding engineering programs in 1902 and renaming itself Tri-State College in 1906. After World War II, enrollment increased significantly, and in 1947 the college reorganized as a nonprofit educational corporation. Reflecting broader academic growth, it became Tri-State University in 1975. During the late twentieth century, the university expanded its campus facilities and academic offerings, including graduate programs. In 2008, Tri-State University was renamed Trine University in honor of alumni and benefactors Ralph and Sheri Trine. Today, Trine University continues to operate from Angola, Indiana, offering a range of undergraduate and graduate programs while maintaining its historic roots dating back to 1884.
