History

The University of Tampa was founded in 1931 in Tampa, Florida, during the Great Depression, initially operating as Tampa Junior College. Classes were first held in Plant Hall, the former Tampa Bay Hotel built in 1891. Frederic H. Spaulding became the first president and helped guide the institution through its early years of limited enrollment and financial uncertainty. In 1933, the school was renamed The University of Tampa as it expanded its academic scope. Following World War II, enrollment grew significantly under the G.I. Bill, leading to the development of additional academic programs and campus facilities. During the late twentieth century, The University of Tampa added graduate programs and strengthened offerings in business and professional studies. Continued campus expansion, leadership transitions, and program growth in the twenty-first century have shaped The University of Tampa into a comprehensive private university serving students from across the United States and abroad.
