History

Texas A&M University-Kingsville was founded in 1925 as South Texas State Teachers College in Kingsville, Texas, after the state authorized a normal school in 1917 to serve the region’s growing educational needs. The institution opened on June 8, 1925, with Robert Bartow Cousins as its first president. In 1929, it became Texas College of Arts and Industries, reflecting an expanded mission that included agriculture, engineering, and industrial studies. Continued growth led to another name change in 1967 to Texas A&I University. The university joined the Texas A&M University System in 1989, strengthening its research and academic partnerships across the state. In 1993, it adopted its current name, Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Over time, the university developed recognized programs in agriculture, engineering, wildlife research, and pharmacy, helping shape higher education access and workforce development in South Texas.
