SUNY College at Geneseo

SUNY College at Geneseo is a public liberal arts college located in Geneseo, New York. SUNY College at Geneseo was founded in 1867 as the Wadsworth Normal and Training School in Geneseo, New York, to prepare teachers for the state’s public schools. In 1871, it became the Geneseo Normal and Training School, later known as the Geneseo Normal School. During the early twentieth century, the institution expanded its curriculum and facilities, reflecting broader reforms in teacher education. In 1942 it was renamed Geneseo State Teachers College, and in 1948 it became an original campus of the newly created State University of New York system. In 1962, the institution adopted the name State University College at Geneseo, marking its transition to a broader liberal arts mission. Over time, SUNY College at Geneseo developed into a public liberal arts college with a wide range of undergraduate majors while maintaining its historical commitment to teacher education.
