SUNY Buffalo State University

SUNY Buffalo State University is a public university in Buffalo, New York, and part of the State University of New York system. Founded in 1871, it began as a normal school dedicated to teacher preparation and has since developed into a comprehensive institution offering undergraduate and graduate programs across the arts, sciences, education, and professional fields. SUNY Buffalo State University was founded in 1871 as the Buffalo Normal School, created to train teachers for the city’s rapidly expanding public school system. Classes began on September 13, 1871, under Principal Henry B. Buckham. In the early twentieth century, the institution expanded its curriculum and facilities, and in 1926 it became the New York State College for Teachers at Buffalo. After joining the State University of New York system in 1948, Buffalo State broadened its academic offerings beyond teacher education, adding liberal arts and sciences degrees and later graduate programs. The campus relocated to Elmwood Avenue and continued to grow throughout the mid-twentieth century with new academic buildings and residence halls. In 2022, the institution was formally recognized as SUNY Buffalo State University, reflecting its comprehensive academic mission and longstanding role in public higher education in Buffalo, New York.
