Stephen F Austin State University was founded in 1923 in Nacogdoches, Texas, opening as Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College to prepare educators for the region. Although authorized by the Texas Legislature earlier, the institution began classes on September 18, 1923, under its first president, Alton W. Birdwell. The campus was developed on land associated with Thomas J. Rusk, and the college quickly expanded its academic offerings. After World War II, enrollment increased significantly as returning veterans pursued higher education. In 1949 the institution became Stephen F. Austin State College, reflecting broader academic programs, and in 1969 it was elevated to university status as Stephen F Austin State University. Over time, the university added graduate degrees, including doctoral programs in fields such as education and forestry. Today, Stephen F Austin State University operates as a public university serving East Texas and beyond.
