State University of New York at Oswego

State University of New York at Oswego is a public university located in Oswego, New York, along the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario. State University of New York at Oswego was founded in 1861 as the Oswego Primary Teachers’ Training School under the leadership of Edward Austin Sheldon. Established in Oswego, New York, the institution focused on improving teacher preparation and became known for advancing innovative instructional methods. In 1913, the school moved to its current lakeside campus on Lake Ontario with the opening of Sheldon Hall. In 1942, it was authorized to grant degrees as Oswego State Teachers College, and in 1948 it became a charter member of the newly formed State University of New York system. By 1962, State University of New York at Oswego had expanded into a comprehensive arts and sciences institution. Enrollment growth in the 1960s and 1970s led to major campus development. In 2023, the institution’s official name was updated to State University of New York at Oswego, reflecting its university designation.
