History

St Olaf College was founded in 1874 in Northfield, Minnesota, by Norwegian-American Lutheran immigrants who sought to establish a non-secular institution rooted in the Lutheran tradition. Originally called St. Olaf’s School, it opened in January 1875 under its first president, Thorbjorn N. Mohn. The institution added a college department in 1886 and was officially renamed St Olaf College in 1889. In 1932, Red Wing Lutheran Seminary merged into St Olaf College, strengthening its theological and academic foundation. Over the twentieth century, St Olaf College expanded its liberal arts curriculum, developed nationally recognized music ensembles, and grew its residential campus on “the Hill” in Northfield. Today, St Olaf College remains a four-year undergraduate institution affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, continuing its historical mission of combining faith, liberal arts education, and global engagement.
