History

Southern Utah University was founded in 1897 in Cedar City, Utah, after the Utah Legislature authorized the creation of a teacher training institution to serve the state’s southern communities. Originally named Branch Normal School, it focused on preparing educators for regional schools. In 1913, the institution became Branch Agricultural College, reflecting an expanded curriculum. It was renamed College of Southern Utah in 1953 and later Southern Utah State College in 1969 as it developed four-year degree programs. In 1991, the institution officially adopted the name Southern Utah University, marking its transition to a comprehensive university offering graduate education. Over time, Southern Utah University broadened its academic offerings and campus facilities while maintaining its historic mission of access and regional service in southwestern Utah.
