History

Southern Connecticut State University was founded in 1893 in New Haven, Connecticut, as the New Haven State Normal School, established to train teachers for the state’s public schools. Arthur Boothby Morrill served as the institution’s first principal, guiding its early development. In 1937, the school gained four-year degree-granting authority and became the New Haven State Teachers College. During the 1950s, Southern expanded its graduate offerings and moved to its present campus. In 1959, state legislation broadened its curriculum beyond teacher education, renaming it Southern Connecticut State College. Continued growth in liberal arts and professional programs led to its designation as Southern Connecticut State University in 1983. Over time, Southern Connecticut State University has expanded academic programs, facilities, and research activity while remaining part of the Connecticut public higher education system.
