History

Southern California University of Health Sciences traces its origins to October 18, 1911, when it was founded in Los Angeles as the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic by Charles Cale and Linnie Cale. Classes were initially held in the founders’ home before the school expanded and relocated within the region. During the mid-twentieth century, the institution consolidated with other chiropractic colleges in California and moved to Glendale in 1950. In 1981, it relocated to its current campus in Whittier, California. The college achieved regional accreditation in 1993. Between 1999 and 2000, it reorganized as Southern California University of Health Sciences to incorporate new programs in acupuncture and Oriental medicine. In the decades that followed, Southern California University of Health Sciences expanded its academic offerings to include multiple doctoral and master’s programs in integrative and health sciences fields, reflecting its evolution from a single-discipline chiropractic college into a broader health sciences university.
