History

Southern Arkansas University Tech was founded on April 5, 1967, as Southwest Technical Institute by Act 534 of the Arkansas Legislature. The institution was established to provide a technically trained workforce for the developing Highland Industrial Park in Calhoun County, Arkansas, on the former Shumaker Naval Ammunition Depot site. Initially operated by the Arkansas State Board of Education, the institute focused on vocational and technical programs aligned with regional industry needs. In 1975, the Arkansas Legislature placed the school under the governance of the Southern Arkansas University Board of Trustees and renamed it Southern Arkansas University Tech. With this transition, Southern Arkansas University Tech gained authority to grant associate degrees and expanded its academic offerings. Over time, it developed transfer programs, specialized training academies, and workforce initiatives, evolving into a comprehensive two-year technical college serving south Arkansas.
