History

South Carolina State University was founded in 1896 when the South Carolina General Assembly established the Colored Normal, Industrial, Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina in Orangeburg. Created as a land-grant institution under the Morrill Act of 1890, the college was designed to provide agricultural, mechanical, and teacher education to African American students during the era of segregation. Thomas E. Miller served as the first president from 1896 to 1911, guiding the institution through its formative years. In 1954, the institution was renamed South Carolina State College, reflecting expanded academic offerings. It gained university status in 1992 and became South Carolina State University. Over time, South Carolina State University broadened its undergraduate and graduate programs, strengthened accreditation, and expanded campus facilities, while maintaining its historic mission of educational access and public service in South Carolina.
