Sonoma State University

Sonoma State University is a public university in Rohnert Park, California, and a member of the California State University system. Established in 1960, the university serves undergraduate and graduate students through programs in the liberal arts and sciences, business, education, and interdisciplinary studies. The campus spans more than 250 acres in Sonoma County and includes academic facilities, residential communities, and natural preserves used for research and field study. Sonoma State University is known for its small class sizes relative to many public universities and for its focus on teaching and student engagement. Students are often drawn to its Northern California location, academic breadth, and opportunities for hands-on learning across a range of disciplines.

Sonoma State University was founded in 1960 when the California State Legislature established Sonoma State College as part of the California State College system. The institution opened in 1961 in temporary facilities in Rohnert Park under founding president Ambrose R. Nichols Jr., enrolling 274 students. In 1966, Sonoma State College moved to its permanent campus after completion of its first major classroom buildings. The institution expanded its academic programs through the 1970s and was granted university status in 1978, becoming Sonoma State University. During the 1990s and 2000s, the university developed additional facilities, strengthened residential life, and acquired natural preserves for environmental research. In the 2010s and 2020s, Sonoma State University experienced enrollment shifts and budget restructuring, including the discontinuation of intercollegiate athletics after the 2024–2025 academic year, reflecting broader changes within the California State University system.
