History

Smith College was founded in 1871 in Northampton, Massachusetts, through a bequest from Sophia Smith, who sought to create an institution offering women an education equal to that available to men. The college opened in 1875 with 14 students and 6 faculty members under its first president, Laurens Clark Seelye. From its early years, Smith College emphasized a rigorous liberal arts curriculum in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. In 1891, trustees began developing a botanical garden to support the growing sciences. During the 20th century, Smith expanded its academic programs and facilities, and in 1975 it inaugurated Jill Ker Conway as its first woman president. Over time, Smith College strengthened interdisciplinary study and consortium partnerships, including participation in the Five College Consortium, shaping its modern identity as a leading women’s liberal arts institution.
