History

Shorter University was founded in 1873 in Rome, Georgia, as Cherokee Baptist Female College by Reverend Luther Rice Gwaltney and members of Rome Baptist Church. Established to provide educational opportunities for young women, the institution was renamed Shorter Female College in 1877 in honor of benefactors Alfred and Martha Shorter. In 1910, the campus relocated to its present hilltop site overlooking Rome. During the early twentieth century, Shorter University expanded its academic programs and gained regional accreditation. In 1948, the institution became coeducational and adopted the name Shorter College. Throughout the later twentieth century, it added graduate programs, strengthened professional studies, and developed intercollegiate athletics. On June 1, 2010, Shorter College officially became Shorter University, reflecting institutional growth and expanded degree offerings. Today, Shorter University continues to operate as a private Baptist university serving students in Rome and beyond.
