History

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago traces its origins to 1866, when a group of artists founded the Chicago Academy of Design to provide formal art education in the city. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the institution was reorganized and, in 1879, became the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In 1882 it was renamed the Art Institute of Chicago, and the school operated alongside the museum. Under the leadership of its first president, Charles L. Hutchinson, the institution expanded its academic programs and public presence. The Art Institute building on Michigan Avenue opened in 1893 during the World’s Columbian Exposition, strengthening the school’s connection to the museum. Accredited since 1936, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago continued to develop new departments, including video and media programs in the 1970s, evolving into a contemporary art and design college in downtown Chicago.
