History

Savannah College of Art and Design was founded in 1978 in Savannah, Georgia, by Richard G. Rowan, Paula Wallace, May L. Poetter, and Paul E. Poetter. The institution was created to offer specialized art and design degree programs not widely available in the Southeast. Classes began in 1979 with a small group of students and faculty, and the college initially offered eight majors. During the 1980s, enrollment grew steadily as Savannah College of Art and Design expanded academic offerings and restored historic buildings for campus use. In 2002, the university opened a study abroad location in Lacoste, France, followed by the launch of online programs in 2003. An Atlanta location opened in 2005 and later merged with the Atlanta College of Art in 2006. In 2010, Savannah College of Art and Design established a campus in Hong Kong, further extending its international presence.
