History

San Jose State University was founded in 1857 as the Minns Evening Normal School in San Francisco, established to train teachers for California’s growing public school system. In 1862, it became the California State Normal School, and in 1871 it relocated to San Jose. As California’s educational needs expanded, the institution evolved from a teachers college into a broader state college, becoming San Jose State College in 1935. In 1972 it was granted university status within the California State University system, and in 1974 it adopted the name San Jose State University. Over time, San Jose State University expanded its academic offerings, research activity, and campus facilities, including the opening of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library in 2003, a joint city-university library.
