Saint Xavier University

Saint Xavier University was founded in 1846 in Chicago, Illinois, by the Sisters of Mercy at the request of Bishop William Quarter. Established as Saint Francis Xavier Female Academy, it became the first Mercy college in the world and the oldest chartered college in Chicago, receiving its state charter in 1847. Saint Xavier University began offering college-level courses in 1915 and evolved from a women’s academy into Saint Xavier College. In 1969, the institution became coeducational, reflecting broader changes in American higher education. In 1992, Saint Xavier College officially gained university status and adopted its current name.
