History

Saint Joseph's University - Philadelphia was founded in 1851 by the Society of Jesus as Saint Joseph's College, marking the beginning of collegiate Jesuit education in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Classes first met near Old St. Joseph’s Church in Center City before the college relocated in 1866 to Girard Avenue. In 1927, the institution moved to its current Hawk Hill campus along City Avenue, where Barbelin Hall became its first major academic building. Saint Joseph's University - Philadelphia expanded its academic offerings throughout the 20th century and was officially recognized as a university in 1978.
