History

Saint Cloud State University was founded in 1869 in St. Cloud, Minnesota, as the Third State Normal School, established to train teachers for the growing state. Led by Principal Ira Moore, the institution began with a small faculty and a student body that was predominantly women. By 1898 it introduced a junior college curriculum, and in 1914 it discontinued its secondary education program. In 1921 the school became St. Cloud State Teachers College and gained authority to award four-year degrees. The first bachelor’s degrees were awarded in 1925. The name changed to St. Cloud State College in 1957 after graduate programs were introduced, and in 1975 it achieved university status as Saint Cloud State University. Over time, Saint Cloud State University expanded its academic colleges and graduate offerings, evolving from a normal school into a comprehensive public university within the Minnesota State system.
