History

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science traces its origins to 1912, when the Chicago Hospital-College of Medicine was founded in Chicago to provide medical education for students who could attend classes at night. The institution later became Chicago Medical School and played a role in expanding access to medical education during the early twentieth century. Under the leadership of John J. Sheinin, who served as dean and president from 1932 to 1966, the school navigated reforms following the Flexner Report and strengthened its academic standing. In 1967, it became the University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School, adding graduate and health professions programs. The university relocated to North Chicago in 1980 and was renamed in 2004 as Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. In recent decades, it has added colleges of pharmacy and nursing and expanded research and simulation facilities, shaping its modern identity as a health sciences institution.
