History

Rockford University was founded in 1847 in Rockford, Illinois, as Rockford Female Seminary during a period of expansion in American higher education. Chartered by the Illinois legislature, the institution was created to provide rigorous academic opportunities for women at a time when such access was limited. Classes first met in a local courthouse before moving to a dedicated campus along the Rock River. In 1882, the seminary granted its first bachelor’s degrees, and in 1892 it was renamed Rockford College. The institution gradually expanded its curriculum and introduced adult education courses in 1919. Although men attended certain programs during World War II, Rockford College became fully coeducational in 1958. In 2013, reflecting expanded academic offerings and graduate programs, Rockford College officially became Rockford University, continuing its long-standing presence in northern Illinois higher education.
