History

Purdue University Fort Wayne was founded on July 1, 2018, when Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne formally separated into two institutions. Its roots trace back to 1941, when Purdue University established the Purdue University Center in downtown Fort Wayne to offer coursework locally. In 1964, Purdue and Indiana University combined their extension programs to create Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), which awarded its first four-year degrees in 1968. Over the following decades, IPFW expanded its academic offerings and campus facilities, including the incorporation of the Fort Wayne Art Institute in 1976. After years of administrative planning, the joint institution was divided in 2018, with non-health programs becoming Purdue University Fort Wayne. Today, Purdue University Fort Wayne operates as a comprehensive regional campus of the Purdue University system in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
