Portland State University

Portland State University is a public research university located in downtown Portland, Oregon. Founded in 1946 to serve returning World War II veterans, it has grown into a comprehensive urban institution offering a wide range of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. The university is organized into multiple colleges and is classified among doctoral universities with high research activity. Portland State University was founded in 1946 as the Vanport Extension Center to provide higher education opportunities for World War II veterans in Portland, Oregon. Established under the leadership of Stephen E. Epler, the institution initially offered lower-division coursework in temporary facilities in Vanport. After the Vanport flood in 1948, operations moved to Portland. In 1955, the Oregon Legislature officially designated it as Portland State College, granting four-year degree authority. During the 1960s, academic programs expanded and enrollment grew, leading to university status in 1969 and the adoption of the name Portland State University. Over the following decades, Portland State University developed graduate and doctoral programs and strengthened its urban mission. In the twenty-first century, the university has emphasized research activity, community partnerships, and adaptation to changing enrollment and funding conditions while remaining a central public institution in downtown Portland.
