History

Ouachita Baptist University was founded in 1886 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, after the Arkansas Baptist State Convention voted in 1885 to establish a Baptist institution of higher education. The Board of Trustees selected Arkadelphia as the site in April 1886 and elected J. W. Conger as the first president later that year. Classes began on September 6, 1886, under the name Ouachita Baptist College. In its early decades, Ouachita Baptist University focused on providing Christian liberal arts education to students in Arkansas and the surrounding region. The institution expanded its academic programs and campus facilities throughout the 20th century and officially became Ouachita Baptist University in 1965. Over time, it developed undergraduate programs in the sciences, business, education, and the arts, while maintaining its Baptist affiliation. Today, Ouachita Baptist University continues to operate in Arkadelphia as a residential Christian liberal arts university.
