Norwich University

Norwich University is a private university in Northfield, Vermont. Founded in 1819, it is recognized as the oldest private military college in the United States and is one of the nation’s six senior military colleges. The university offers undergraduate and graduate programs in fields such as engineering, cybersecurity, criminal justice, business, nursing, and the liberal arts. Norwich combines a Corps of Cadets with a traditional civilian student population, attracting students interested in military service, public service, leadership development, and technical professions. Its rural campus in central Vermont supports both academic study and military training, and the institution is closely associated with the development of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.

Norwich University was founded in 1819 in Norwich, Vermont, by Captain Alden Partridge, a former superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Established as the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy, the institution promoted a curriculum that blended liberal arts, civil engineering, and military science. In 1834 it received a charter from the State of Vermont and became Norwich University. After a fire destroyed its campus in 1866, Norwich University relocated to Northfield, Vermont, where it remains today. During the 19th century, the university contributed officers and militia leaders, strengthening its military identity. It later became recognized as the birthplace of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. Over time, Norwich University expanded its academic offerings beyond military studies, developing undergraduate and graduate programs while maintaining its Corps of Cadets tradition into the twenty-first century.
