Northern Michigan University

Northern Michigan University is a public university located in Marquette, Michigan, in the state’s Upper Peninsula. Northern Michigan University was founded in 1899 by the Michigan Legislature as Northern State Normal School to train teachers for the state’s Upper Peninsula. Located in Marquette, Michigan, the institution opened with a small class of students and a primary focus on teacher preparation. During the early twentieth century, Northern Michigan University expanded its campus and academic offerings while remaining centered on education. It underwent several name changes, becoming Northern State Teachers College in 1927, Northern Michigan College of Education in 1942, and Northern Michigan College in 1955. In 1963, under Michigan’s new state constitution, Northern Michigan University was officially designated a comprehensive university. Graduate programs expanded over time, and the institution diversified into business, health, science, and technology fields. In 1989, its campus became home to a U.S. Olympic Education Center. Today, Northern Michigan University continues to serve regional and national students through a broad range of academic programs.
