Missouri State University-Springfield

Missouri State University-Springfield is a public university located in Springfield, Missouri. Established in 1905, it serves as the flagship campus of the Missouri State University system. Missouri State University-Springfield was founded in 1905 as the Fourth District Normal School in Springfield, Missouri, with a primary mission of training teachers for the region’s public schools. Classes began in 1906, and William Thomas Carrington served as the first president. The institution expanded beyond teacher education in the early twentieth century, becoming Southwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1919 and Southwest Missouri State College in 1945 as academic programs broadened into the liberal arts and sciences. In 1972, it was renamed Southwest Missouri State University to reflect growing undergraduate and graduate offerings. Enrollment increased steadily in the late twentieth century, and in 1995 the Missouri General Assembly assigned the university a statewide public affairs mission. In 2005, the institution adopted the name Missouri State University, marking a new phase in the history of Missouri State University-Springfield as a comprehensive public university.
