Michigan Technological University

Michigan Technological University is a public research university located in Houghton, Michigan, in the state’s Upper Peninsula. Founded in 1885, the institution began as a mining school and has evolved into a comprehensive technological university. Michigan Technological University was founded in 1885 in Houghton, Michigan, as the Michigan Mining School to train engineers for the region’s copper mining industry. Established by the state of Michigan, the school began with a small faculty and student body focused on practical mining education. In 1897 it became the Michigan College of Mines, reflecting broader academic offerings, and in 1927 it was renamed the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. During the mid-twentieth century, programs expanded beyond mining into engineering and applied sciences. In 1964, the institution adopted its current name, Michigan Technological University, marking its transition to a comprehensive technological university. Over time, it added colleges in business, sciences and arts, forest resources and environmental science, and in 2019 established the College of Computing. Today, Michigan Technological University remains a public research institution serving students in Houghton and beyond.
