History

McKendree University was founded in 1828 in Lebanon, Illinois, by pioneer Methodists as Lebanon Seminary, making it the oldest college or university in the state. The school opened in rented facilities under the leadership of Edward Raymond Ames, its first president. In 1830, the institution was renamed McKendree College in honor of Bishop William McKendree, an early leader in American Methodism. During the nineteenth century, McKendree University expanded its curriculum beyond preparatory studies and strengthened its identity as a Methodist-affiliated college. Through periods such as the Civil War and the Great Depression, the institution continued operating and gradually broadened its academic offerings. In July 2007, McKendree College officially became McKendree University, reflecting expanded graduate programs and institutional growth. Today, McKendree University maintains its historic campus in Lebanon while serving students from across the United States and abroad.
