Louisiana Tech University

Louisiana Tech University is a public research university located in Ruston, Louisiana. Founded in 1894, it is part of the University of Louisiana System and offers undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees across colleges of engineering and science, business, education and human sciences, applied and natural sciences, and liberal arts. The university is classified as a research institution and is known for programs in engineering, business, aviation, and cybersecurity. Louisiana Tech University was founded in 1894 in Ruston, Louisiana, as the Industrial Institute and College of Louisiana, created to provide practical and industrial education for the region. Arthur T. Prescott became its first president, and classes began in 1895. In 1898, the Louisiana Constitution changed the institution’s name to Louisiana Industrial Institute. By 1921, it was renamed Louisiana Polytechnic Institute as it expanded its curricula and began granting standard baccalaureate degrees. During the mid-twentieth century, enrollment grew and academic offerings broadened, reflecting the state’s increasing demand for higher education. In 1970, Louisiana Polytechnic Institute officially became Louisiana Tech University, marking its transition to comprehensive university status. Since then, Louisiana Tech University has expanded graduate programs, research activity, and campus facilities, developing into a public research university serving students from across Louisiana and beyond.
