History

Lawrence University was founded in 1847 in Appleton, Wisconsin, when Boston philanthropist Amos A. Lawrence pledged funds to establish a college in the Wisconsin Territory. Chartered on January 15, 1847 as Lawrence Institute, the school began classes in 1849 and was renamed Lawrence University before instruction commenced. It was among the early coeducational colleges in the United States, enrolling men and women from its earliest years. Edward Cooke served as the first president beginning in 1853. During the presidency of Samuel G. Plantz from 1894 to 1924, Lawrence University experienced significant growth in enrollment and campus construction. The institution was known as Lawrence College from 1913 until 1964, when it resumed the name Lawrence University following consolidation with Milwaukee-Downer College. Today, Lawrence University remains an undergraduate-focused liberal arts institution with a Conservatory of Music in Appleton.
