John Carroll University

John Carroll University is a private Jesuit Catholic university located in University Heights, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Founded in 1886, it operates within the Jesuit educational tradition and emphasizes undergraduate liberal arts education alongside business and professional programs. The university is organized into the College of Arts and Sciences, the Boler College of Business, and the College of Health. John Carroll University was founded in 1886 in Cleveland, Ohio, as St. Ignatius College by the Society of Jesus to serve the city’s growing Catholic population. The institution opened with a classical curriculum and Jesuit leadership, and John B. Neustich, S.J., served as its first president. In 1923, St. Ignatius College was renamed John Carroll University in honor of Bishop John Carroll, the first Catholic bishop in the United States. The university relocated in 1935 to its current campus in University Heights, where expansion of academic buildings and residence halls followed. During World War II, John Carroll University participated in the V-12 Navy College Training Program. The university became coeducational in 1968. In the decades since, John Carroll University has expanded its academic offerings, added facilities such as the Dolan Center for Science and Technology, and continued its development as a Jesuit institution in Northeast Ohio.
