Brown Sr., who established the school as the Southwestern Collegiate Institute to provide practical Christian education for students of limited means. In 1920, the institution was renamed John E. Brown College, reflecting its growing academic scope. By 1934, it adopted the name John Brown University as it expanded its curriculum and institutional structure. Throughout the mid-twentieth century, John Brown University developed into a four-year, degree-granting institution and strengthened its ties to churches and regional industries in northwest Arkansas. The campus grew steadily, adding academic facilities and student housing while maintaining its interdenominational Christian identity.
