History

Indiana University-Southeast was founded in 1941 as the Indiana University Falls City Area Center, established by Floyd McMurray to provide local access to higher education in southern Indiana during World War II. Early classes were held in area high schools in New Albany and Jeffersonville. In 1945, the institution became the Indiana University Jeffersonville Extension Center, allowing students to complete freshman and sophomore coursework before transferring to Indiana University Bloomington. In 1968, the campus was renamed Indiana University-Southeast and began granting its first degrees. The university moved to its current campus in New Albany in 1973, expanding its academic offerings and facilities. Over time, Indiana University-Southeast developed into a comprehensive regional campus within the Indiana University system, adding professional schools, residence halls in the 2000s, and a broader selection of undergraduate and graduate programs to serve the region.
