History

Indiana University-South Bend traces its origins to 1922, when Indiana University began offering extension courses in South Bend, Indiana. Classes were initially held at Central High School to serve local students who could not travel to Bloomington. During the 1940s and 1950s, the program expanded, and in 1961 the first dedicated building opened on land along the St. Joseph River. Four-year degree programs were authorized in 1965, and the campus awarded its first bachelor’s degrees in 1967. In 1968, the institution was officially named Indiana University South Bend. Graduate programs began in 1970, and enrollment grew steadily through the late twentieth century. Additional facilities, including the Franklin D. Schurz Library and Wiekamp Hall, supported academic expansion. Today, Indiana University-South Bend continues to serve northern Indiana as a comprehensive regional campus within the Indiana University system.
