History

Indiana University-Northwest traces its origins to 1921, when Indiana University first offered formal classes in Lake County through a program supported by the Gary Public School System. Over the following decades, courses were held at various locations across Northwest Indiana. In 1959, a permanent building was dedicated in Gary, marking a significant step in establishing a stable campus presence. In 1963, the Gary Center and Calumet Center were formally unified as the Northwest campus of Indiana University, creating what is now Indiana University-Northwest. John C. Buhner was named chancellor in 1961, helping guide the campus through its early development. Over time, Indiana University-Northwest expanded its academic divisions, added degree programs, and developed modern facilities to serve the region. Today, it remains a key public institution providing accessible higher education in Gary and the surrounding communities.
