History

Indiana University-Kokomo traces its origins to 1945, when it was officially established as an Indiana University extension center in Kokomo, Indiana. The campus grew out of Kokomo Junior College, founded in 1932, and was reorganized after World War II to serve returning veterans and local residents seeking affordable higher education. Virgil Hunt served as the first administrator, guiding the early development of the extension center. In 1965, Indiana University-Kokomo moved to its current Washington Street campus, marking a major phase of expansion. During the following decades, new academic buildings, a library, and student facilities were added, and degree offerings expanded from associate programs to baccalaureate and selected master’s degrees. By the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Indiana University-Kokomo had evolved into a comprehensive regional campus within the Indiana University system, continuing to serve north central Indiana.
