History

Illinois Wesleyan University was founded in 1850 in Bloomington, Illinois, by civic and religious leaders who sought to establish a college of collegiate grade in central Illinois. Originally chartered as Illinois University, the name was amended to include “Wesleyan” after the institution received support from the Methodist Church. The first president, Clinton W. Sears, began serving in 1855. Early classes started in 1850, and the first permanent campus building, Old North Hall, was completed in 1856. In the late nineteenth century, Illinois Wesleyan University expanded its curriculum, establishing a School of Law in 1873 and later developing programs in music and the arts. The university admitted Black students beginning in 1867 and women in 1870. Throughout the twentieth century, Illinois Wesleyan University formalized its College of Liberal Arts and College of Fine Arts and introduced nursing programs, evolving into a modern undergraduate liberal arts institution.
