History

Illinois State University was founded in 1857 in Normal, Illinois, as Illinois State Normal University, making it the first public university in the state. Established shortly after the creation of the Illinois State Board of Education, the institution’s original mission was to prepare teachers for the state’s public schools. Classes first met in downtown Bloomington before moving to the new Old Main building in 1860 in what became the town of Normal. Charles Edward Hovey served as the first president. During the twentieth century, Illinois State University expanded beyond teacher education, adding colleges and graduate programs and broadening its academic scope. The institution was renamed Illinois State University at Normal in 1964 and adopted its current name in 1967. In recent years, Illinois State University has continued to grow its research profile and academic offerings, including the establishment of a College of Engineering.
