History

Idaho State University was founded in 1901 as the Academy of Idaho in Pocatello, Idaho, following legislation signed by Governor Frank W. Hunt. The institution opened in 1902 and initially provided preparatory and technical education to serve the region. In 1915 it became the Idaho Technical Institute, reflecting a growing emphasis on vocational and technical training. In 1927 the school was designated the University of Idaho–Southern Branch and operated under the University of Idaho. In 1947 it achieved four-year status as Idaho State College, marking a major institutional milestone. Idaho State University adopted its current name in 1963 as it expanded academic offerings and graduate education. Over time, Idaho State University developed strong programs in health sciences, engineering, and research, growing into a comprehensive public university serving southeastern Idaho and beyond.
