High Point University

High Point University is a private university located in High Point, North Carolina. Founded in 1924 and affiliated with the United Methodist Church, the institution began as High Point College before adopting its current name in 1991. High Point University was founded in 1924 in High Point, North Carolina, as High Point College, a cooperative effort between the Methodist Protestant Church and the city’s civic leaders. The college officially opened on September 14, 1924, with three buildings, nine faculty members, and 122 students. Its creation followed the earlier work of Yadkin College, a Methodist institution that closed the same year and transferred assets to the new college. High Point College faced financial challenges during the Great Depression and declared bankruptcy in 1934 before reorganizing and continuing operations. In 1991, the Board of Trustees renamed High Point College to High Point University to reflect expanded graduate offerings. Since the mid-2000s, High Point University has significantly expanded its academic schools, campus facilities, and enrollment, shaping its modern identity as a comprehensive private university in North Carolina.
